Review: Closer by Kylie Scott

About CLOSER:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kylie Scott comes a new story in her Stage Dive series…

When a stalker gets too close to plus-size model Mae Cooper, it’s time to hire some muscle.

Enter former military man turned executive protection officer Ziggy Thayer. Having spent years guarding billionaires, royalty, and rock n roll greats, he’s seen it all. From lavish parties through to every kind of excess.

There’s no reason some Instagram stylista should throw him off his game. Even if she does have the most dangerous curves he’s ever seen…

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do. **

Excerpt:

I’d had bodyguards before. But only for events like fashion week or a big shoot. Just for a limited amount of time. My contract with Ziggy, however, was open ended, dependent on the heart in the box situation. Once he’d grilled me about what the police were doing (investigating my entire life), my routine (I don’t really have one. It’s consumed by work), and my calendar for the next few days (I’d freed up time to finish unpacking and then back to work on my lingerie line), he drove me to the gym. There was one I used a couple of times in the apartment building, but I generally do better with some active encouragement and guidance.

Guess Ziggy approved of my Land Rover because he gave it another one of those almost-smiles. I, however, continued to receive the full professional cold front face. This was definitely going to take some getting used to.

“Who’s your shadow?” asked Kwana, my awesome trainer.

I paused mid-lunge, my breath coming hard and fast. “My bodyguard, Ziggy. You like him?”

“He’s pretty. Don’t stop, keep moving.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

“You don’t usually have one of them around. Have you been getting hassled or something?”

Kwana stood with her arms crossed, all lean muscles beneath brown skin. Since we were in an open area at the end of the main part of the gym, Ziggy waited over by the wall, just out of earshot. He stood with his arms loose at his side, his gaze constantly wandering a circuit from me—around the room, over to the exits, and back again. Always on alert.

“More a precaution than anything,” I said.

No matter how much I liked Kwana, no one outside my inner circle needed to know about the incident. The fewer people who found out about the gross cow heart and knife the better.

There’d been no further news from the police. Though it was never likely they’d track down a suspect and charge that person the next day.

Case closed, hooray!

Mae Cooper is as confident as she is beautiful. Mae is a model that is not the size of a toothpick. She’s naturally beautiful and has the eye and passion for fashion. She’s a bit of a walk calamity at times but has a great sense of humor to go along with it. With fame comes fans and sometimes those fans do things that make you have to look over your shoulder. Enter the need for a bodyguard. A bodyguard that has Mae’s body wanting to be guarded in more ways than one.

Ziggy Thayer ex military now turned bodyguard to the stars. High profile clients are nothing new to him. The hottie of a man is always about the job. Getting involved with clients is something he doesn’t do. Until a curvy model who is in her beauty outweighs her outer by far has him thinking about more than protecting his charge.

Kylie Scott gives the Stage Dive groupies another wonderful chapter to the story with Closer. Mae is an amazing character all around. Mae is herself and I love that about her. I loved the moment that Ziggy lost his control and realized that Mae was more than a job. That photo shoot!!!!!! Visiting with the Stage Dive family is always a treat. You can always count on Mal to put a smile on your face. Mae and Ziggy had chemistry from the moment they set eyes on each other. From the nervous rambling, the back-and-forth banter and also hot moments, these two were made for each other. Just the right about of suspense added in to make Closer a fine afternoon or late night read!

About ELI’S TRIUMPH:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Joanna Wylde comes a new story in her Reapers MC series…

Peaches Taylor spent the last seven years slinging drinks and dodging drunks at the Starkwood Saloon. Some might call it a dead end job, but to her it was an investment—another six months, and she’d have enough money to buy the place.

Life would’ve been perfect if Eli hadn’t come home.

Eli King is ready to settle down. He stood by his brothers when they needed him, paying the price for their freedom with his own. Now it’s time to claim his reward—the Starkwood Saloon. He’s got the cash to buy the bar, the skills to run it, and just one person standing between him and his dream: Peaches Taylor.

She’s been driving him crazy since they were kids, and not in the good way. When she was six, she shoved a spider down his pants. When he was ten, he locked her in a closet overnight. Then she hot-wired his car at seventeen, and things got ugly…

They’re adults now, and the Starkwood isn’t a toy to fight over—it’s the hill they’ll die on. No prisoners. No compromises. No mercy.

Peaches Taylor and Eli King are going to war.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Excerpt

Id earned this bar, paid for it with five long years in prison, holding my tongue and taking the punishment for a crime that wasnt mine. Gus owed me for that alone. The fact that hed get a cash payout was just a bonus at this point.

No reason for me to feel guilty. And that was the truth.

Still, I could see how much this sucked for Peaches. Shed put in time, too. Time and good faith. Riling her up was a blast, but Id never wanted her hurt. Not for real. I cared about the girl. Cared about her a lot.

Too much.

Gus had been weak. I loved my uncle, but hed f*cked this one up big time. She deserved better from him—and from me. I should be in there with them. Decision made, I reached for the door.

Get out! Get the f*ck out of here, you lying bastard!

The door burst open, and Gus stumbled out, walking backward. I caught his arm and steadied him as the slabslammed shut again. I heard the heavy bolt sliding shut, locking us out. My uncle looked at me, then sighed.

Actually went better than I expected.

Glad I dont have to deal with hiding a body.

Not yet, he replied, then sighed again. Shes not a happy camper. Probably shouldve warned her that our plans might change once you got out.

Why didnt you? Wouldve been a lot easier on her.

Guess I didnt want her turning on me,”my uncle admitted, surprising me with his honesty. I knew shed hate me for it. God, but I miss her mom. Saw her in town a couple weeks ago. Its been twenty years, and Glory still wont even look at me.

Raw pain filled his eyes. I cleared my throat, uncomfortable. F*ck. I didnt like this. Didnt like my girl hurting, and didnt like having to see my uncle like this.

Didnt like knowing I was part of it.

A loud thump came from behind the door, breaking the moment. There was a crash, and then some kind of tearing noise. Shit.

Some women pouted when they got upset.

Others cried.

Peaches had always skipped that part, moving straight to revenge. Another crash. This one so hard that the door rattled. I pictured her all pissed off in there, those glorious t*ts of hers straining against the front of her low-cut black StarkwoodSaloon shirt. My c*ck twitched. Christ, she was hot when she got angry.

Her cheeks would be flushed, and shed run her fingers through that wild, dark hair of hers in frustration.

Total sex hair.

“Bring it,” Sean said, giving her a wink.

Ignoring his head games, Dani got into position. Fists up, elbows close to her ribs, lead leg forward. In this drill, Sean as the kicker could only make offensive moves with his legs. While, as the puncher, she couldn’t use her legs at all. Which meant she had to get in close while defending against his strikes.

They circled. Feinted. Attacked.

Sean was strong as hell, but she was faster by a lot. Dani used that to her advantage. Blocking and dodging his kicks and then getting inside to attack his ribs and gut and kidneys in the spare seconds before he regained his footing.

Each punch she landed released a pressure valve somewhere deep in her brain. And that release was so fundamental that she barely felt the kicks that Sean landed. Not that she gave him much chance to get them in, because she kept him close, under pressure, and on the defense blocking her punches.

“Damn, girl,” he said, respect and wariness plain in his voice.

“You told me to bring it,” she said, looking for another in. He blocked a shot at his ribs and delivered a spinning side kick that landed on the side of her thigh.

“Someone has some aggression to work out today,” he said.

“Do you have to talk so much?” she asked, sweat curling down the side of her face as she attacked again. This time she drove forward, forcing him to retreat and not letting him get in a kick.

Sean blocked and covered and dodged until they were in a clinch, breathing hard and face to face with no room to punch or kick. And for no good reason, heat roared over Dani. Heat that almost incinerated her from the inside out. Maybe it was the bulk of his muscles or the slick slide of their sweat or his scent of clean soap from a recent shower that couldn’t quite remove the hint of fire from his skin and hair.

As if he sensed it, Sean’s dark eyes flashed hot and his jaw went tight. Breaking the rules, he grabbed her around the waist and pulled her in close, letting her feel his erection for one spare moment before taking her to the mats in a controlled move that showed just how freaking strong he was. She expected to get the wind knocked out of her, but he’d more laid her out than knocked her down.

A whistle blew. “Switch up,” Colby called. “And follow the damn rules, Riddick. We’re not doing ground work right now.”

Everyone laughed.

But Dani and Sean were caught in a staring contest with their faces mere inches apart.

She wanted him inside her so bad that she nearly gave voice to it.

Her brain went immediately to that night.

How they’d circled each other throughout that whole damn party. How Sean had walked her to her car, parked right in front of his, which she’d begrudgingly thought sweet despite her insistence she didn’t need a damn chaperone. How they’d started bantering about something she couldn’t even remember now—because all she could remember was how desperately aroused she’d felt. How she’d teasingly punched him and he’d caught her arm and hauled her in against him. How the shock of his erection against her hip had made her look up at him. And how he’d claimed her mouth and she’d let him.

Oh, hell yeah, she’d let him do that and so much more…

And she wanted it again.

It was that thought that finally made her brain come back online. “Get. Off.”

His brow arched. Just the tiniest bit. “You can take your aggression out on me anytime.” He spoke in a rushed whisper, but the words impacted her like a body slam, pressing her back into the floor with some unseen force. Because she’d heard that tone in his voice before, when she’d straddled his lap on the big bench of his pick-up and finally taken him deep.

“Fucking hell, Dani. Take all of me.”

“Now,” Dani said, hoping he didn’t hear that her voice was affected, too.

In a move that seemed too lithe for someone his size, Sean hopped up then extended his hand to her.

Shook as she was, Dani accepted his help, then regretted it when he didn’t immediately release her hand but instead held her right in front of him—exactly like he had that night. “Just say the word.”

Dani swallowed hard. “Hold your breath waiting for it. Please.” She glared up at him, irritated with herself for letting him see inside her for that one unguarded moment when her body had reacted so viscerally to his. It was like that night had tuned their bodies into the same wavelength, and now they could communicate whether she wanted it or not.

Amusement and challenge slid into his gaze. “You’ll not only say it, Dani. You’ll beg me for it.”

The leader is smart, cunning, and ruthless. And he’s also his brother.

Elizabeth MacKenzie never dreamed she’d marry Cole MacKenzie, but thanks to her father’s meddling, Cole was hers to have and to hold. Forever. She needed an equal, not a man to rule her life, and Cole fit the bill every in every way. If only he loved her.

Excerpt:

“My place is here, with my wife and this town. My duty is to them first. The job you’re asking me to do is meant for a younger man without any ties. I’m not going to pick up and leave my wife for months at a time to track outlaws. There’s plenty of good I can do here, with the badge I already have.”

“A wife is just a wife,” Jesse said. “But this is your chance to go down in history.”

Cole laughed. There was nothing just about Elizabeth. “I never asked to go down in history. I’m just doing the best I can to make the world we live in the best it can be. I want a family, and I don’t want to let them inherit a world of wars and violence.”

“War is in the nature of man,” Jesse said. “It’s been that way since Cain and Abel. And here we are, a whole bunch of years later with the story of two brothers.”

Cole had been watching the street, subconsciously seeking out his wife. He was starting to get worried that she’d gotten stuck somewhere. She should’ve been there by now.

And then, almost as if he’d conjured her, she came through the window of visibility, the snow swirling around her. She’d left her head uncovered, and loose strands of dark hair had come out of the long braid that rested over her shoulder. Her long coat swirled around her legs, and her pistols were slung low on her hips. Unlike any other woman he’d ever met, she chose to wear men’s trousers in her day-to-day work at the ranch. He’d never actually seen her in a dress. But he definitely appreciated what she did to a pair of men’s pants.

Jesse saw her too, and his fork stopped halfway to his mouth.

“Good Lord,” Jesse rasped.

“She’s something, huh?”

Jesse blew out a breath and put his fork down. “Oh, good. You see her too. I was afraid maybe I’d died and she was an angel of death.”

“There are worse ways to go,” Cole said, smiling.

“That’s for damned sure.” Jesse picked up his fork again, but he’d forgotten what he was doing so he set it down again. “I’ve got to tell you, MacKenzie, I’ve seen a lot of things in my life, but I’ve never seen anything like her.”

She was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. And she was all his.

4 Stars

Whether it’s the MacKenzies of today or those of yesteryears, a visit with them is an adventure that only a MacKenzie can give.

This is a special story in my eyes. Cole and Elizabeth are simply amazing. Seeing how the MacKenzies began their clan, Ms. Hart treated readers with Dawn of Surrender. Cole and Elizabeth story is simple yet it’s so something profound that I became completely enchanted with their tale. Two hard working good people, doing what need to be done while finding who they are and making their marriage work.

Dawn of Surrender may just be my favorite of the MacKenzie stories. Sassy and sexy, yet simple beautiful. Cole and Elizabeth show way it’s so easy to love the MacKenzies.

About NO RESERVATIONS:

New York Times Bestselling author Kristen Proby takes us back to her highly acclaimed Fusion series.

Chase MacKenzie is not the man for Maura Jenkins. A self-proclaimed life-long bachelor, and unapologetic about his distaste for monogamy, a woman would have to be a masochist to want to fall into Chase’s bed.

And Maura is no masochist.

Chase has one strict rule: no strings attached. Which is fine with Maura because she doesn’t even really like Chase. He’s arrogant, cocky, and let’s not forget bossy. But when he aims that crooked grin at her, she goes weak in the knees. Not that she has any intentions of falling for his charms.

Definitely not.

Well, maybe just once…

4 Stars

Maura is a straight forward woman is so many ways. That’s just one one thing I liked about her. A teacher that you shouldn’t judge by her cover. Maura has sassy and spunk. She’s the kind of woman that you want at your side.

Chase comes with a player reputation but I saw him as a man loving his life. Flirty, cocky and a bit dominant side. Chase is confident in both himself and his business. He gives as good as he gets. He’s a fun character in many unexpecting ways.

I really enjoyed No Reservations. A short and quick read that turns the heart up to scorching levels. I love a good character driven story and that what No Reservations is. Two amazing and awesome main characters, excellent banter that increases the flame to the fire. Two people who know who they are and what they want. Two people who are each other’s match in too many ways. Chase and Maura give readers one enticing ride. A slow burn, intense chemistry and some wonderfully intimate moments. No Reservations is a fantastic read.

Trouble by Avery Flynn

Release Date: June 27th, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Trouble, an all-new sexy standalone from Avery Flynn is coming June 27th!

Trouble eCover v300dpi

Synopsis

A high school reunion is about to get down and dirty and a whole lot more complicated in this new romance from USA Today bestselling author Avery Flynn.

Brains and a badass attitude. That’s all troublemaker Leah Camacho took with her when she left Catfish Creek. She’d promised herself she’d never go back, but when the invite to her tenth high school reunion arrived along with the chance to show everyone who doubted her what a success she’s made of herself, she couldn’t resist. However, when she discovers a 15-carat, stolen diamond in her rental car’s glove box, there’s only one man she can turn to for help—the same sexy, stubborn domineering man who’d smashed her heart all those years ago.

Sheriff Drew Jackson knew a long time ago that Leah Camacho was nothing but trouble and has sworn to never get caught up in her again—no matter how damn sexy she is or how badly he’d failed to forget her. But, when the woman who test drove his heart right into a concrete wall rolls into Catfish Creek with some serious bad guys on her tail, it’s up to him to keep her safe—even if that means guarding her hot bod 24/7 without giving into temptation or losing his mind.

Excerpt

Spinning the wheel as he hit the brakes, he came to a stop behind the sports car at an angle that blocked it from reversing. Drew got out of his truck, keeping the open door between him and the other car and flicked open the leather strap on his hip holster that kept his sheriff’s office-issued 9mm locked in place.

“Get out of the vehicle,” he hollered.

The car’s driver’s side door opened wide. The first part of the driver to appear was one shapely leg wearing skin-tight denim punctuated with scuffed up black Doc Martens. Some sort of danger alarm sounded in Drew’s head, but not the kind that warned of bullets or other bodily danger. A woman got out, facing away from him, her hands up and her dark hair a long silky curtain that led his attention straight down her back to the high curve of her ass poured into those jeans. Parts of him that had no place in police business sat up and noticed. Her ass was a testament to the reason why society required women to wear full dresses for so long—because men were weak, lust-addled idiots when it came to asses like the one that looked more than a little familiar to Drew. His gaze snapped back up as his internal alarm went from quiet buzz to all-out blare. He knew that ass, that hair, and those damn boots.

“Turn around,” he ordered.

She did. Her lush mouth—one he knew far too well—was compressed into a tight line, her attention focused on something behind him. Leah Camacho was back and with her always came trouble—for him, for his sanity, and for the part of him that still thought of her at opportune moments in the shower.

“Drew,” she said, making his name sound like a curse and a promise. “Get on the other side of the door.”

Listening to Leah Camacho was the last thing he should be doing, but he did it anyway for reasons he didn’t understand. Just as he rounded the door, an extended cab pickup truck turned the corner. The tires were big, the windows dark, and the speed was slow. As it puttered by, Drew looked it over and mentally confirmed it didn’t belong to any of the usual suspects in Catfish Creek. Of course, the high school reunion was bringing in lots of folks who hadn’t been here in a while. At the corner, the truck sped up, peeling away from the stop sign and taking a hard right back toward the highway.

“Who was that?” he asked, the smell of burnt rubber drifting back toward them.

“No fucking clue but they’ve been on my ass for the past hour,” she said, reaching up and winding her long hair into a knot on the top of her head—the move emphasizing her amazing tits and making Drew’s mouth go dry. “I didn’t realize I’d be stopping on your turf.”

He bet not. After what happened last time they were together, she’d made avoiding him into an art form. However, the fact that he was the law in town, however temporarily, meant avoiding her was an impossibility because wherever Leah Camacho went, trouble was sure to follow. He glanced down at exhibit A.

“What happened to your tire?” he asked.

“No clue,” she said, her voice tight with a lie. “I must have run over something.”

Drew squatted down and took a closer look at the tire. It didn’t have a tear, it was just gone as if it had been a blow out. If Leah had run over something big enough to do that, she would have realized it.

“What in the hell is going on, Leah?”

Excerpt:

“Uh…” She gave up pretending to breathe normally, her neck ceasing to support her head. “Ky, please…”

And then she felt it. Tiny bites along the insides of her thighs, branding her through the cotton leggings. Slow, precise, just enough pressure. Commanding her neck to play ball, Bree looked down to find Kyler’s eyelids at half mast, his white teeth sinking in every couple inches, his own chest and stomach shuddering in and out, his nipples in tight points. At the sight, the walls of Bree’s core constricted and released with enough force to send a rattling gasp flying from her mouth.

Kyler.”

“Bree?”

“Just…”

“Yeah.”

His double grip beneath her knees vanished, but before her legs could fall, Kyler was inserting his hips to catch them. One arm snaked around the base of her spine, sliding her forward and out of the machine…and then there she was. Legs wrapped around her ex-boyfriend’s waist, heart pounding, moisture pooled between her thighs, their mouths separated only by a matter of an inch.

“You wore that cologne on purpose,” she breathed. “Admit it.”

His grin flashed. “Guilty as charged and unrepentant as a sinner.”

Her gasp only widened his smile. “Bragging about sinning now, are you, Kyler?”

“You say my name all shaken up and sexy like that when you want me to kiss your pretty mouth.” Hunger made his tone sound like two knives sharpening each other. “I reckon nothing has changed.”

About Tessa Bailey:

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.

Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.

She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

They say life can change in an instant…

After losing her sister in a devastating car accident, chef Quinn Weller is finally getting her life back on track. She appears to have it all: a loving family, a dream job in one of L.A.’s hottest eateries, and a gorgeous boyfriend dying to slip an engagement ring on her finger. So why does she feel so empty, like she’s looking for a missing piece she can’t find?

The answer comes when a lawyer tracks down Quinn and reveals a bombshell secret and a mysterious inheritance that only she can claim. This shocking revelation washes over Quinn like a tidal wave. Her whole life has been a lie.

On impulse, Quinn gives up her job, home, and boyfriend. She heads up the coast to the small hometown of Wildstone, California, which is just a few hours north, but feels worlds apart from Los Angeles. Though she doesn’t quite fit in right away, she can’t help but be drawn to the town’s simple pleasures…and the handsome, dark-haired stranger who offers friendship with no questions asked.

As Quinn settles into Wildstone, she discovers there’s another surprise in store for her. The inheritance isn’t a house or money, but rather something earth shattering, something that will make her question everything she thought she knew about herself, about her family. Now with a world of possibilities opening up to Quinn, she must decide if this new life is the one she was always meant to have—and the one that could finally give her the fulfillment she’s searched so long for.

Excerpt:

“Hi,” she said, possibly never so happy to see someone in her life. “Remember me?”

His lips quirked.

Yep. He remembered her all right. “I’ve got a problem,” she said.

His smile faded. “You okay?”

She exhaled, feeling like an idiot. “There’s a big bug in my tub and the sink is dripping. Do you have time to help or are you off the clock?”

He studied her for a beat. “I’ll grab some tools and be right up,” he finally said.

She watched him stride off. Maybe she couldn’t find her feels, but apparently she could still appreciate a nice ass.

Good to know.

Five minutes later there was a simple, firm knock at her door. She opened it and stood back to let him in, but he remained on his side of the doorway, toolbox in hand.

“I’m Mick Hennessey,” he said.

Great, but she had no time for introduction. Bug in her tub! “Nice to formally meet you, Mick, but…” She pointed to the bathroom.

With a mock salute, he ambled in there.

Quinn remained right where she was, counting off the seconds while she heard nothing. “Did you get him?” she finally called out.

“The bug?” he asked.

“No, the president of the United States! Yes, the bug!”

The only response was the sound of the toilet flushing and she panicked. “You squished him first, right?”

Mick stuck his head out of the bathroom and flashed her a smile. “Worried he’s going to swim his way back up and bite you on the—“

No!” Yes…

He vanished back into the bathroom. Quinn heard some other sounds that were hopefully related to him working on the stink. Unable to stop herself, she made her way over there and peered in. “Where’s your dog?”

“Coop? With my mom. She lives here in town and made stew. Apparently, I don’t rate on the same scale as beef stew.” He was on his back, head and shoulders wedged beneath the sink, legs bent at the knees because he was longer than the bathroom. He wore a T-shirt advertising some pub in San Francisco named O’Riley’s, that had risen up, revealing his low-slung jeans and some impressive abs, including those V muscles that made women so stupid.

“Can you fix it?” she asked.

His hands looked confident working the wrench before he pulled his head from beneath the sink and sent her a slow smile.

At the barely recognizable flutter low in Quinn’s belly, and also decidedly south of her belly, she froze in shock. She’d felt next to nothing for a very long time, but it hadn’t been so long that she couldn’t place this for what it was.

Lust.

Excerpt: The Darkest Corner by Liliana Hart

The Darkest Corner (Gravediggers Book 1) by Liliana Hart

Date of Publication: May 23, 2017

Blurb

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Liliana Hart’s first book in her suspenseful Gravediggers series, featuring an elite group of mysterious men who might be dead to the world, but are also tasked with saving it—and no one can ever know.

The Gravediggers aren’t exactly what they seem. They’re the most elite of the world’s fighting forces—and all they have in common is that they’ve been betrayed by the countries they’ve died for. Because they are dead. To their country, their military, and their families.

Sometimes the dead do rise…

Deacon Tucker is a dead man walking. A former black ops agent, he was disavowed and stripped of all honor before being recruited as a Gravedigger. But his honor and good name no longer matter, because no one knows he’s alive, and he’ll never get the recognition he deserves. His mission is simple: save the world or die trying. And for God’s sake, don’t ever fall in love. That’s a rule punishable by death. The kind of death a man can’t be brought back from.

Tess Sherman is the only mortician in Last Stop, Texas. She has no idea how Deacon Tucker ended up in her funeral home, but she’ll eat her hat if he’s only a funeral home assistant. Deacon is dangerous, deadly, and gorgeous. And she knows her attraction to him can only end in heartache.

Deacon is on a mission to stop the most fatal terror attack the world has ever known—what’s known as The Day of Destiny—a terrorist’s dream. But when he discovers Tess has skills he can use to stop them, he has to decide if he can trust her with secrets worth dying for. And, most important, he has to decide if he can trust her with his heart.

Excerpt:

The darkness pressed in on him at thirty thousand feet. His skin was clammy with sweat beneath his specially designed flight suit. He kept his head pressed against the wall of the C-130 cargo plane and focused on breathing. He was closed inside a metal can at thirty thousand feet. It wasn’t the fear of falling from the sky that had his balls in his throat. It was the ever- shrinking walls of the plane, the decrease in oxygen as they ascended higher, and the darkness that kept pressing in on him.

His only reprieve was to think of Tess. He’d been selfish to keep her up the hours before they’d left instead of letting her sleep, but he hadn’t been able to get enough of her. He wanted to imprint himself on her memory, on her body, so that if anything happened to him she’d know how much he loved her. They’d made love for hours. And that’s exactly what it had been.

Making love.

They’d only dozed for what seemed like minutes before it was time to get up and dress. Her eyes had been shadowed, and he could see the worry etched in her face, but she gathered her things in silence and nodded in thanks when he handed her an insulated cup of coffee.

Her eyes had grown large and round when they’d showed her the way to the underground tunnel and strapped everything to both of the ATVs, but still there was no talking. As they sped out of the tunnel, he kept his hands tight on the wheel, focusing on the end of it and not imagining the walls caving in on him—being buried alive in the rubble—again. The chopper had been waiting for them, ready for takeoff, and he’d squeezed her hand in reassurance when she looked at the lake in its stillness—as if she’d never see it again.

The ride had been short to the private airstrip where their plane waited. The sun was just peeking over the horizon when they made takeoff.

The jet was equipped with much of the same equipment HQ was, and their focus was on making sure the tanker didn’t change course or that the Russians didn’t try to confuse the satellite for the twelve-hour flight to Nome, Alaska. But the Russians seemed confident in their abilities of concealment, which was their mistake.
